Project CYPRESS

Architect: Shane Denman Architects (https://www.shanedenmanarchitects.com/)
Builder: Merico Constructions
Furnishings: Various, with guidance by Kira and Kira (https://kiraandkira.com.au/)

Located in between coastal suburban development and beach shacks, Cypress elevates itself to capture spectacular views over the Gold Coast coastline and Hinterland.

An existing second dwelling recently built by the client is located at the rear of the site and ultimately determined the restrained footprint of the new home. The compact footprint encouraged vertical construction and in doing so created an uncomplicated layout with a centralised circulation core and an intimate feel. The narrow vertically stacked form over 4 levels creates a contrasting vernacular to surrounds, with subtle weathering warm tones and refined form.

Full height glazing floods natural light into the ground floor Entry, further enhanced by landscaping deep within the floor plate creating an undercroft rainforest and pool area.

Elevating the traditional Living, Dining and Kitchen to first level podium, internal and external Living spaces occupy the first floor above the ground level podium. The island bench sits centrally forming a conscious separation between the rooms. The elevated level of the encapsulates living and coastal landscape podium, connecting the built form which would be traditionally on the lower ground floor. Choosing to explore relations between surrounding elevated landscaped podium, provides privacy, views, a connection between the built form and the landscape, and seeks to capture coastal breezes which would otherwise be absent in a ground level suburban yard.

The main bedroom suite on the second level is a spatially shared haven of bedroom, robe and Ensuite. What may have been a modest bedroom suite with limited views was resolved by removing internal walls. Clever layout of each zone retains a sense of privacy, yet feels spacious and connected.

Floors above the podium lend a balanced juxtaposition to the lower massing of the brick and concrete, choosing to explore lightweight opulent form. Restrained organic concrete podium filled with landscape establishes the base for and transition to the lightweight architectural form of cypress. Cypress cladding explores the relationship between landscaped tones and natural timber. Cypress Cladding has been utilised and allowed to weather, from which a colour palette emerged.

The external materiality is embraced throughout the internal spaces of Cypress, selection of light oak flooring and joinery throughout, utilising the mid tones of the aging cypress cladding. The restrained material palette throughout frames a coastal home illuminated by natural light.
